"If you can make a difference, why wouldn’t you?"

–Mark Abrams '68, Alumnus and Donor

Mark Abrams ’68 believes in making every day count, and in making a difference for others while doing it. A proud University of Hartford alumnus, Abrams wears his class ring every day, a symbol of his deep connection to the University and his strong belief in the power of education. His class ring isn’t the only thing that ties him back; it’s his generosity and commitment to our students who needs it the most.

Abrams reminds us that making a difference does not have to be complicated. It takes a kind heart, a sense of purpose, and some laughs along the way. When asked why he gives to the University of Hartford, his answer is simple. “Look around. There are so many people who have less. If you’ve been given the gift of a good life, you have an obligation to give back. Like my dad used to say, ‘If you have two dollars, give one of them to someone who needs it more than you do.’

When asked about what inspired him to become a donor, his answer is down-to-earth: “If you can make a difference, why wouldn’t you?” Through his scholarship, The Mark L. Abrams Family Endowed Scholarship, he has chosen to support students who might not otherwise have a chance at pursing higher education. “These kids deserve an opportunity,” he shared as he reflected on his own college experience which helped shape his future. “It wasn’t until after I graduated that I realized just how fortunate I had been”.

Abrams is always quick to point out the joy in life, sharing that it is his sense of humor that has kept him grounded through the years. “If you’re not laughing, you’re crying,” he says. This joyful outlook helped him make the easy decision to leave a planned gift to the University. “You can’t take it with you,” he remarked with a shrug of his shoulders. “I have been lucky in life, and I want others to have that chance, also”.

For Abrams, giving to UHart is more than just a financial decision; it is about creating change. “Every day, I try to make a difference in any way I can,” he says. Abrams’ legacy will ensure that future UHart students have the opportunities they need to thrive, just as he did all those years ago.
