Alison Ho ’24 is a junior Entrepreneurial Studies major and Project Management minor at the Barney School of Business. Not only is she able to balance her major and minor-related studies, but she makes time for extracurriculars as well. Working as a Peer Mentor at the Career Studio, honoring her commitment as a Residential Assistant, and representing Barney as a Student Ambassador have enabled her to acquire exceptional time-management skills and expand her network.
All of Alison’s current roles and emphasis on networking have enabled her to develop high-value personal and professional relationships through the years. Her commitment to connect with staff and interns on LinkedIn and attending all of the Nassau Financial Group events over the summer have allowed her to build meaningful professional relationships. She notes, “These experiences have taught me self-discipline, respect, professionalism, and accountability.” Alison adds how she has also been able to use these professional connections to assist her Barney peers. “My privilege to connect with these successful students has allowed me to help other students from Barney get in contact with my network from Nassau when they are in need of a connection, which is what I think business is all about,” she says.
Alison credits Barney, as well as the Career Studio, to having a significant impact on her professional career. Access to the abundance of career ready events helped Alison to land a position at Nassau Financial Group during the Summer of 2022 as their Human Resources Intern. Her experience at Nassau was nothing short of amazing. She was able to practice real-world recruitment, administrative and interpersonal skills within this program. She describes her key takeaways as: “Building meaningful relationships and connections with those you work with is just as important as your work product. A lot of times during your first internship or work opportunity, you focus your time and effort on accomplishing tasks and being productive. You might even feel shy at first coming in as a new hire but coming out of your shell and introducing yourself to everyone in the office is what will make a lasting impression, and even benefit you in the future.”
A piece of advice from Alison is, “Create valuable relationships with those around you, it is a small campus and small world. Also, go outside your comfort zone! You’ll discover quicker what you enjoy or don’t enjoy, and what is most important to you when crafting your career options."
After graduation, Alison is excited to enter the business-world and work in an HR or project management setting. Alison has large goals for the long-term as she aims to open her very own café chain one day.
