Shailynn Williams ‘25, a marketing major in the Barney School of Business, has a job offer lined up after she graduates in May. She will be working at Fresh Start Worx, a local nonprofit that she has interned at and continues to do social media and donor relations work for.

Shailynn became interested in marketing through her passion for being creative and innovative, especially with the ever-changing trends on social media. She was also interested in how companies get customers to buy their products over other competitors, specifically using social media as a leveraging tactic.

Shailynn says that Barney and UHart have helped her prepare for different scenarios in the professional setting. “The workshops and resources the University has available for students are really helpful,” she says. “The résumé building workshop was great when I was applying for internships.” Shailynn cites Barney classes, like the BAR ones, for teaching her so many useful things—how to act in a professional setting, what employers in her field look for, how to build an effective résumé, and which interview techniques work best. She also values the Excel lessons, since that program will be used extensively in her career field.

Shailynn specifically recognizes Carmina Cavazos, associate professor of marketing, for making an impact on her. “I've had four classes with her, and they were all very informative. She makes sure to incorporate relevant, engaging class activities so we can follow along with her and really understand the topic at hand.”

The nonprofit that Shailynn works for, based in Hartford, focuses on workforce development. She looks forward to beginning full-time work there after completion of her coursework this semester.
