Barney Student Gains Skills by Balancing Athletics, Academics, and Community Engagement
Tyrell Bailey ‘26
Securing a rewarding job and working alongside his father fuels Tyrell Bailey's ‘26 success at UHart.
For Tyrell Bailey ‘26, balancing academics and athletics has always been a way of life. However, receiving a scholarship to the University of Hartford marked a significant turning point in his journey. Coming from New Jersey, Tyrell took on the responsibility of caring for his ailing grandfather on his mother’s side, all while managing his studies and athletic commitments. If he ever met his scholarship donor, Tyrell would express his heartfelt gratitude: “This scholarship came at a time when my family really needed it, and it has made all the difference.”
When he first arrived at UHart, Tyrell declared a major in Business Analytics and Managerial Economics. But it didn’t take long for him to realize that his true passion is management, driven by a dream to help his father run the family restaurant one day. “I want to take what I learn and give back to my community.” His education at UHart isn’t just about his own future; it’s about creating opportunities for others, especially those who might lack access to higher education.

Tyrell’s athletic passion flourishes as a member of UHart’s Track and Field Team, where he excels in hammer and shot put. This year, he’s eager to take on a new challenge: the discus. “I love testing myself physically, and the athletic weight room has become my favorite place on campus. It’s where I focus, push myself, and inspire others to do the same.” Tyrell’s motivation extends beyond the weight room and the track; he strives to uplift those around him, spreading joy among his teammates and friends.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Tyrell has embraced a new leadership role by helping to establish a chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity on campus with his close friends. “Starting a fraternity with a tight-knit group has been one of the most meaningful experiences here,” Tyrell reflects. “It has shown me the lasting impact we can have, even after graduation.”
Looking ahead, Tyrell’s goals are clear. He aims to secure a rewarding job after graduation, but his primary aspiration is to return home to work alongside his father, applying his management skills to the family business while using his education to uplift his community. “Sharing knowledge is powerful,” Tyrell asserts, and he plans to do just that.
