Hartford Art School Student’s Dream of a Creative Career is Cultivated at UHart
Allison Hoyos ‘25
The love of illustration for Allison Hoyos ’25 fuels her passions and ambitions.
From an early age, Allison Hoyos ‘25 knew that art would be a very important part of her life. In fact, creativity is in her DNA: her grandparents who were both artists and raised Allison in Columbia. During childhood, her creativity was cultivated, and she had dreams of one day expressing her feelings through art in a meaningful career. While initially she imagined herself as a graphic designer, she ultimately pivoted to pursue illustration, thanks to the guidance of her mentors at UHart. When Allison arrived at the University, she met with her counselor who suggested a new major- and introduced her to the world of illustration, she then realized her true calling, combining her artistic expression with storytelling.
This subtle shift was where things began to fall into place for Allison, and her creativity took hold and began to shine at UHart. Allison’s UHart experiences have been transformative, a beautiful journey made possible by the generosity of a scholarship donor. “Thank you so much for helping me pursue my dream,” is what she would say if she could meet her donor in person. “This scholarship has allowed me to stay all four years here, and it means the world to me.”
Her time at UHart has been filled with growth, not only as an illustrator, but as a member of this diverse, supportive community. “I love how UHart gave me the chance to connect with people from different majors. The clubs, and events, like Hawktober homecoming weekend, are where I’ve made some of my best memories,” she shared. Being surrounded by supportive, creative minds and mentors has pushed her forward, and her passion for illustration shines through her achievements, like winning second place in a prestigious art competition with The New Yorker Magazine.
Her artwork is inspired and motivated by the joy and happiness it brings others. As the oldest of eight siblings who are all still living in Columbia, Allison currently has begun working on a children’s book, inspired from the complete joy it will bring to her sibling’s lives. “Seeing their reactions and knowing I’ve made them happy is what I love most about being an illustrator.”
Allison’s future is bright as it is ambitious. After graduation, Allison plans to continue her adventures. She dreams of moving to Europe to teach art to children and hopes to continue illustrating for major publications such as The New Yorker magazine. Wherever life takes her, she is ready to create and bring joy through her art that speaks to the world. With the support and opportunities she has received here at UHart, Allison is well on her way to making her future brighter than ever, and holds gratitude for those who have helped her get here. Allison shared; “I would not have been able to accomplish any to his without the support of my scholarship.” There is no doubt that her drive, passion, and talent of her art will continue to inspire.
