Jared Rubin ’21, a mathematics major with a minor in data science, is getting ready to present his honors thesis at this spring’s UHart Undergraduate Honors Research Colloquium. With supervision from Mathematics Professor Robert Decker, Jared began the research project, Soliton Collisions in the Sine-Gordon Equation, in May 2020, which involves creating initial conditions for solitary wave motion that can be applied to physics. He is also planning to present his thesis at the Mathematical Association of America’s Northeast Regional and MathFest Conferences.
“I enjoy problem-solving in an era that is reliant on technology more than ever,” says Jared on why he chose to study mathematics and data science at UHart. It also influenced his decision to further his education in Drexel University’s MS in Data Science program after graduation this May.
A recipient of UHart’s Regents Merit Scholarship, Jared also participated in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program with UHart’s Prosthetics and Orthotics Department. This project allowed Jared to work alongside other students researching “Modeling Feedback Control in Human Movement,” which was funded by the United Science Foundation (USF). “It was a six-week intensive training experience, involving a week of formal discussions on technical communication, professional development, grant-writing/funding a project, and ethics,” he says.
Outside of class and research projects, Jared has held leadership positions for UHart’s Ski Club and the Green 707 Club, which works on converting a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck to electric power. He also participated in Hillel and Chabad, as well as different Philosophy and Math clubs. Jared says his work as an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences is one of his most memorable experiences. “Being an A&S Ambassador has been incredible because I get to share my story with the future generations of students at UHart.”
Jared says UHart has been “nothing but amazing,” and throughout his four years, he can easily pinpoint his success to the culmination of all the courses he has taken, as well as the professors that have inspired him. He mentions specifically Mathematics faculty Diego Benardete, Mark Turpin, Robert Decker, and Andrew Starnes, as well as Associate Professor of Economics Jane Horvath, and Professor of English and Honors Program Director Donald Jones. Jared credits all of them with helping him find his love for his major and guiding him to success.
Jared suggests students interested in studying mathematics investigate all “subfields” and find the one that suits them best. He also suggests reaching out to professors in other fields because they are willing to talk about their programs and to help future mathematicians find their calling. Jared also encourages all students to try new things. He says with so many different clubs and activities to participate and thrive in, it is the best way to grow.
