Communication major Angelina Reyes ’27 says her passion for the public relations and communications fields was solidified after she recently attended the PR Decoded conference in New York City. Angelina’s academic advisor, Associate Professor Sarah Miner, recommended that she attend the conference after a representative from PR Week contacted her for the name of a top student who she thought would benefit from the opportunity to participate and connect with industry leaders.

Sponsored by PRWeek in partnership with the MSL public relations agency, the conference gave Angelina the chance to connect with like-minded students and learn from seasoned public relations practitioners “It further confirmed my belief that communications and public relations are broad fields with lots of opportunities,” says Angelina. “So many different jobs and roles fall under communication, so there are a lot of possibilities. We were encouraged to network with each other, as well as with professionals through an organized lunch and during designated networking breaks.”

Angelina credits the School of Communication with nurturing her passion and providing her with a robust foundation. “The small class sizes enable you to work closely with your classmates and professors,” she says. “Even as a sophomore, I feel I’ve learned so many necessary skills in every communication class I’ve taken.” Angelina says her favorite course so far is Making Sense of Social Media with Associate Professor Miner, which covers different digital marketing strategies for social media.

“UHart has a great communication program, and the professors are very knowledgeable and here to help you,” says Angelina. She advises incoming communication students to build relationships with them, as well as with their classmates. “I also recommend students take classes outside of communication, such as in the Barney School of Business or the Hartford Art School. There are many other courses and potential double majors or minors that enhance a communication degree.”

In addition to her coursework, Angelina serves as a student ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences where she represents the School of Communication at various events. She also works in the library archives as a student assistant. “My favorite thing about UHart is all the amazing people I’ve met,” she says.
