For members of the University’s Department of Public Safety, good judgment is key in keeping students, faculty, staff, and visitors safe on campus. That judgment garnered two Department members special recognition recently.
Corporal Matthew Vieweg and Officer Armando Elias received the Chief’s Special Recognition Award for their handling of a student mental health incident. The award is given to any member of the University community who renders aid or assistance during an emergency and, in doing so, prevents the incident from escalating and becoming more severe.
“Corporal Vieweg and Officer Elias’s actions represent the highest level of professionalism, values, and service for the University of Hartford Department of Public Safety,” said Chief Michael Kaselouskas in presenting the award.
Members of Vieweg’s family joined members of the Department to celebrate the award. The two awardees also called up members of their squad to share in the honor.
“We have folks living here 24/7. This is their home away from home,” said Aaron Isaacs, vice president of student success and dean of students, who spoke at the ceremony. “And I sleep a little easier because of the people that I’m looking at right now in front of me.”
