A multicultural music festival presented by Hillyer College, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences and The Hartt School, will offer a free performance and workshop on Wednesday, March 5. The Flamenco: Voices of Andalusian Gitano festival, featuring the acclaimed LOS RICOS: Sonia & Ismael from the Sonia Olla & Ismael Fernández Flamenco Company, will take place at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Theater.
The workshop in the Shaw Center at 12:45 p.m. is open to all and is aimed at fostering intercultural dialogue within the University community, reflecting its cultural diversity. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the artists and open new pathways to understanding the importance of expressive culture.
The evening performance will celebrate the vibrant heritage of Andalusian Flamenco, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Gitano people (often referred to as gypsies). Renowned for their resilience, passion, and deeply emotional artistry, the Gitano legacy is brought to life through a captivating blend of music and dance. The ensemble of four exceptional artists masterfully integrates cante (song), guitar, palmas (clapping), percussion, and Flamenco dance into a breathtaking tribute to Andalusian culture, infused with a contemporary energy that reflects the multicultural spirit of New York City.
Any questions about the performance and workshop can be directed to Hillyer College Assistant Professor of Music Ju-Yong Ha.
