OVERVIEW:
To prepare firefighters for their career and ensure the safety of themselves and their fellow firefighters, they attend firefighter training courses. The primary course for qualification is Firefighter I (FFI) which is an approximately 160-hour course covering the basic theory of firefighting and hands-on job performance requirements (National Fire Protection Agency, 2019). This case study examined the engagement of student volunteer firefighters at a non-residential regional fire school during the FFI course. Findings indicated that student engagement is impacted by the students’ connection to peers, instructors, and course content. Recommendations for practice include the utilization of collaborative learning environments, increased instructor accessibility, and adapting content to connect to a diverse student population.
