Patrice McGregor, an incomparable and much-beloved veteran of the Office of Admission and Financial Aid, passed peacefully on Sept. 29.
A valued and vital daily presence at Bates House until her recent retirement, McGregor spent 22 years at UHart’s hub for student admission and financial aid, beginning as a research assistant in 2002. She progressed into roles of increasing responsibility, serving as a direct loan and financial aid specialist, assistant director of student financial aid, and senior assistant director of student financial aid.
McGregor assisted countless students over the years, successfully helping them navigate complex and frequently changing government and institutional financial aid programs. She did so with kindness and patience. She had a knack for developing close professional relationships with students and staffers alike, and mentored many new colleagues who came aboard. Patrice prioritized being a team player at all times and was always the first one in the office every day. She was the first and only Bates House Fun Friday coordinator where she organized semi-monthly team building activities. Whenever necessary, McGregor led financial aid program transition efforts and managed several system upgrades. Her extensive knowledge helped lead the financial aid office through many changes over the years and cannot be replaced.
Co-workers describe her as one of the most caring, honest, committed, passionate, loyal, and selfless people they had ever met. In the office, she was known for always bringing in treats to celebrate a colleague’s birthday and for always lending a listening ear when needed.
While at the University, McGregor, who was born in Hartford, participated in the Laura Johnson Leaders Program, completed a bachelor’s degree of her own, and watched proudly as her children also graduated from UHart.
“Patrice showed me an unmatched loyalty,” recalls Katherine Presutti, executive director of financial aid and strategic analytics. “She was my go-to and whenever I needed anything, whether personally or professionally, she was there. I will miss her guidance, selflessness and friendship.”
