Research Grants to Rigorously Evaluate Innovative and Promising Strategies to Prevent Firearm-Related Violence and Injuries

Summary: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC, Injury Center) is soliciting investigator-initiated research to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of innovative and promising strategies to prevent all forms of firearm-related violence and injuries. For the purposes of this announcement, firearm-related violence includes mass shooting incidents, other firearm homicides/assaults, firearm suicides/self-harm, unintentional firearm deaths and injuries, and firearm-related crime. The intent of this announcement is to support research to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies to keep individuals, families, schools, and communities safe from firearm-related violence, injuries, deaths, or crime.


Evaluate STEADI-based Fall Prevention in Assisted Living Facilities

Amount: $2,800,000 over 4 years ($700K/year)

Summary: This NOFO is intended to fund the adaptation, implementation, and evaluation of the effectiveness of CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) fall prevention initiative and related tools in nursing home, assisted living facility, or long-term care facility settings (referred to collectively as assisted living facilities). CDC will fund an awardee to adapt the STEADI algorithm and materials for two or more assisted living facilities, implement, and then evaluate the use of those materials and programming.  Of particular interest is research that focuses on populations experiencing high rates of older adult falls and fall injuries within these assisted living facilities. These disproportionately affected populations could include: Tribal populations; rural populations; populations disadvantaged by reduced economic stability or limited education attainment; and populations with cognitive (e.g., dementia, Alzheimer’s disease), comorbidities, or physical limitations.
