FLC 100-Level Courses

We are excited to invite you to join our on-going Faculty Learning Community (FLC), focused on implementing evidence-based practices that promote a student-centered approach to teaching and learning in 100-level courses. As active participants, you will play a crucial role in supporting first-year students' transition to life at UHart.

The FLC series is faculty-centered and driven by the interests of its members, offering a valuable opportunity to foster a sense of community by collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines. Discussions will be flexible and adaptable to meet the evolving needs of the group.  Through collaboration and sharing, we aim to identify pedagogical solutions with actionable steps to enhance the teaching and learning experience for all. This will involve examining current research on instructional practices and sharing our collective teaching experiences. Focusing on 100-level courses will help students navigate the transition from high school to college, maximizing their unique educational and social experiences. Your participation will also contribute to supporting and enhancing students at all undergraduate levels.

Last year, some vibrant and engaging topics discussed included tried-and-tested strategies to engage and motivate students before and during our courses, as well as ways to enhance students’ sense of accountability and responsibility as independent learners.  We also explored creating meaningful and relevant assessments and leveraging AI (Artificial Intelligence) to streamline the time taken to evaluate our teaching and subsequent student learning. These insights can then inform future lesson plans quickly and effectively.

There will be six opportunities for in-depth discussions on member-generated topics during the academic year. These in-person lunch meetings will be held in the University Commons Private Dining Room on Mondays from 12:45 p.m. – 2 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Sept. 23, 2024
  • Oct. 21, 2024
  • Nov. 18. 2024
  • Feb. 10. 2025
  • March 10, 2025
  • April 14, 2025

If you are interested in joining this vibrant collaborative and supportive community of educators, please complete this Participant Form by Sept. 1. We will be very happy to work together with you this coming year!
