Clarification on Direct Deposit Dates and Names

The Payroll Office has received a number of inquiries about Direct Deposits and how they appear in employee bank accounts, and we would like to send out clarifications on how Direct Deposit posts to accounts.

As a reminder, the pay date should always post by the pay date listed and the semi-monthly and biweekly pay calendars posted here.

Some banks make funds available before the actual pay date, however this is a feature limited to some banks and is not a guarantee for any individual employee or bank. It should always be assumed that any successful Direct Deposit will post by the proper check date at the latest.

We've also received inquiries saying that a deposit was made by the University of Hawaii and not the University of Hartford. The state code of Hawaii is HI and not HA, and the reason this might be seen on your bank statement is that the name gets shortened by banking services and should not be confused with the University of Hawaii.

Lastly, we have noticed that some employees have been referring to the page in Self Service where employees can update their Direct Deposit accounts on file. Some employees have indicated concern for their net pay by referring to the dollar figure shown on that page, saying that it mismatches their expectations. On this page, the only amount that shows is whatever the most recent net pay was from the last fully processed paycheck, and should not be assumed to be the upcoming deposit for a pay date that has not yet passed. It is better to wait for the pay date to occur when the latest available paystub will be available to review all gross pay, deductions, and net pay for a pay date.

We hope the information provided here has offered more clarity for reviewing your direct deposit transactions, and always feel free to reach out to Payroll with questions.
