Barney Takes 50 Students to New York City

On Friday, Dec. 1, a group of 50 students, faculty, and staff visited the Big Apple as a grand finale to this semester’s Hawks Take Flight program. This program, specifically for first-year students, has required attendance with links to assignments in the course The World of Business. Students attend workshops on Friday mornings then join the sophomores to hear a Barney alum offer career advice and participate in a mix and mentor time with their peers. Overall program attendance is tracked with points calculated for a grand-prize trip to New York City.

Students started the Corporate Visit Day by being split into two, with half visiting Synchrony Bank and half visiting Accenture, where Barney alumni welcomed them. The entire group met back for lunch in Times Square — and were joined by many successful Barney alumni. Students were then able to walk around the area and even see the lit-up Rockefeller Center tree. The whole group finished the day together with a visit to MasterCard.

The skills that students learned throughout Hawks Take Flight, helped them navigate all different aspects of their big day in the city. Topics taught in this program included dressing for success, personal finance, authentic confidence and self-esteem, body language, time management, emotional intelligence, and active listening.
