Last month a group of civil engineering students visited a bridge construction along Route 9 in Middletown, Connecticut. The focus of their visit was the application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) in the repair of bridge steel beam ends. The students had the opportunity to witness completed projects as well as ongoing construction work, gaining valuable insights into the industry.
The six students, ranging from first-year undergraduates to juniors, gathered at 8:30 p.m., to climb to a platform located beneath the bridge deck. At that spot, students could see how UHPC is used to repair bridge steel beam ends. UHPC is known for its strength and durability, making it an ideal choice for bridge construction and repair. After, the students also visited an active construction site. Here, they had the opportunity to witness ongoing work and engage in discussions with the industry professionals responsible for completing the project.
The team thanked McNamee Construction Corporation's Director of Engineering, Tim Cruse, P.E., for helping the students attend the site visit.
