What We Talk About When We Talk About Art with Cat Balco, Carrie Cushman and Zee Onuf

What is hiding here? (from Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock)

“What is going on in this work of art?”  This central question helps us find meaning in art; yet it can also be unanswerable if we don’t instinctively connect with the work.  Have no fear!  Three marvelous instructors will expand your vocabulary for talking about art, no matter the era or genre.  Cat Balco will immerse you in abstract painting, using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) to explore, enjoy, and find meaning in those surfaces.  Carrie Cushman will discuss installation art, before you try your interpretive hand at Minoo Emami: Under My Veil, an installation she curated to showcase the work of an inspiring contemporary Iranian artist.  Zee Onuf will build on the recent blockbuster Rijksmuseum Johannes Vermeer show to demonstrate ways to interpret any artwork.  She discusses attribution and connoisseurship, (e.g., Is there a “signature Vermeer style”?), why and how have art historians been duped, as well as artists’ techniques, cultural and artistic context, symbolic meaning, and biography.

Thursdays, Sept. 21 (Shaw Center/Hillyer Hall), Sept. 28, Oct. 12 (KF Room/Harrison Libraries) | 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. | $60
