Fox 61 Examines Search and Rescue Acoustics with Professor
When search and rescue crews hoped “banging noises” would lead toward the distressed Titanic-seeking submersible this week, Fox 61 looked into the reliability of the acoustics clues with help from Professor Paul Slaboch.
Slaboch, an associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and acoustical engineering and director of the aerospace engineering program at the University of Hartford, noted that sound can travel very far in the ocean. It was possible the noises were coming from the submarine, but it would be difficult to pinpoint its location without multiple tools each detecting the noises and allowing for specific location calculations, he explained.
Crews worked quickly with assistance from multiple countries, as people everywhere followed updates on the search and various pieces of equipment that were being deployed. Debris was found later this week, with the voyage company sadly confirming that all passengers had passed away.
