Unlike the spring semester, UHart’s fall semesters have traditionally continued without a reprieve, from the start of classes all the way to Thanksgiving. Beginning this coming fall semester, a fall break is being implemented to break up the semester for students, faculty, and staff— and to allow for a mental recharge. Thank you to the committee of colleagues who thoughtfully worked through these calendar changes.
Fall 2023 break will take place on Thursday, Oct. 5, and Friday, Oct. 6. The semester is being extended by two days to accommodate this break: Tuesday, Dec. 12 (for classes that would have met Oct. 5) and Wednesday, Dec. 13 (for classes that would have met Oct. 6). Instructors should be sure to note these changes on their syllabi. Residence halls will remain open during this fall break period.
The University will be closed on both Thursday, Oct. 5, and Friday, Oct. 6. Essential staff performing critical functions in departments that are responsible for public safety, health, and operations must report to work as they normally would, or as directed by their supervisor. HRD will work with Payroll and the respective departments of staff in essential positions in order to ensure accurate time reporting. Employees who are not clear if they are considered essential staff should discuss the matter with their supervisor.
