WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Alyssa Viscardo of the Hartford softball team won the Hawk Hunt Business Pitch Competition, the Barney School of Business announced.

Viscardo beat out 13 other students representing the Barney School of Business; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions; College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture; The Hartt School; and the Hartford Art School in this year's competition.

"We are so proud of Alyssa for winning this award," said head coach Angie Churchill. "We know how hard she works in the classroom and continues to strive for excellence on and off the field. This has been a challenging year for these student-athletes with most classes continuing to be online and all the COVID challenges we are still facing. For Alyssa to take this challenge head on and win this award is a great achievement."

Viscardo pitched a product called "LifeLine." LifeLine is wearable technology in various forms such as scrunchies, bracelets, and watchbands that connect with an app through which the user can call police or contacts to give their exact location.

"I entered into the pitch competition to not only pitch a business idea but to work on my presentation and public speaking skills," said Viscardo. "This competition gave me an opportunity to apply the knowledge I've learned at Barney so far into a real-life scenario."

For winning, Viscardo earned a $700 cash prize and a mentoring session with a group of innovation executives.

The Hawk Hunt Business Pitch Competition provided students the opportunity to pitch their business ideas in front of an esteemed panel of alumni judges and get valuable feedback.
