Beyond Donkeys and Elephants: Minor Political Parties in Contemporary American Politics
Bilal Dabir Sekou, Associate Professor of Political Science in Hillyer College, had his chapter, The New York and Working Families Party, published in the book, Beyond Donkeys and Elephants: Minor Political Parties in Contemporary American Politics (Richard Davis, ed., Lawrence, KS: University of Kansas Press). In chapter four of the book, Sekou discusses how given the structural limits to ballot access third parties face, the Working Families Party in New York and Connecticut uses its access to the ballot to work within the Democratic Party in an attempt to move it to the left and fight for the passage of legislation the WFP considers essential to support the needs and interests of working class people.
