Student Mathletes to Compete in State Math Contest
131 middle school Mathletes® from 46 state schools will compete in the Connecticut State MATHCOUNTS Competition at the University of Hartford on Saturday, March 7 from 12:15- 3 p.m. The event will take place in Gengras Student Union (GSU) on the University's campus. State winners will advance to the 2020 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition to be held in Orlando, Florida on May 10 & 11.
Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall. Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches on subjects that include algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry. The event will kick off with two guest speakers: Thomas Vasko, PE, PhD, Professor of Engineering from Central Connecticut State University, presenting Careers in Engineering and Allison M. Pacelli, Professor of Mathematics from Williams College, presenting The Mathematics of Voting and Elections. With this year's presidential election in full swing, many people wonder if their votes truly matter? Is there a better voting method out there? In this talk, we’ll look at voting and elections from a mathematical perspective. Followed by the guest speakers will be the MATHCOUNTS Countdown Round. The top sixteen Mathletes are paired in a fast-paced, oral competition, competing against each other and the clock to solve problems. The winners from the state competition will advance to the 2020 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition to be held in Orlando, Fla., on May 10 & 11.
The competition is organized by the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers, hosted by the University of Hartford and sponsored by The Connecticut Engineers Education Foundation.
The University of Hartford’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) is proud of the continued partnership with MATHCOUNTS over the last thirty-six years. We strive to offer a unique experience for the young students participating in the competitions, continue to promote the importance of STEM in academics, and expose the students to the University at an early stage in their education.
MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among the nation’s students. The program focuses on middle school students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability. Students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a medical, scientific, mathematical, engineering or technical career.
