Hartt Dance Presents Historic Performances
Presenting works of iconic creators, Martha Graham and August Bournonville along with three new creations by contemporary choreographers Katie Stevinson-Nollet, Debra Ryder, and Stephen Pier, the Hartt School Dance Division begins the celebration of their 25th Anniversary, 2019 - 2020. Graham’s response to the menace of fascism, Chronicle, was created in 1936 and is just as powerful and relevant today as it was 83 years ago. The 3rd act of Bournonville’s Napoli from 1842 is a staple of many professional ballet companies around the world. Our excerpt of the Tarantella is coached by faculty member Hilda Morales, former principal dancer with American Ballet Theater and the Pennsylvania Ballet. Katie Stevinson-Nollet has created a new work to the hauntingly beautiful sounds of Portuguese Fado music for 7 dancers. Debra Ryder drew inspiration from flowers for her new creation and Artistic Director, Stephen Pier, creates a statement for the men of the Dance Division to 2 movements of Beethoven’s String Quartet #14.
“Since its founding in 1994 the Hartt School Dance Division has carried on the principles established by its founder, Enid Lynn. Graham and Classical Ballet technique have always been important aspects of the training of strong contemporary dancers here and we honor those traditions and their contemporary evolutions with this exciting program.” - Stephen Pier.
