Please mark your calendar for another informative diversity and inclusion campus event, "Everything You Wanted to Know About Native Americans...But Were Afraid to Ask,” on Tuesday, November 19 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Shaw Center in Hillyer Hall.

Do Native Americans pay taxes? What is the right term: Indian, Native American, or American Indian? Why do we only see Indians in western movies?

In honor of Native American Heritage Month (November), join UHart adjunct faculty members endawnis Spears (Diné/ Ojibwe/ Chickasaw/ Choctaw), Chris Newell (Passamaquoddy), and Jason Mancini as they provide a cultural overview of Native America, speak to the most common misconceptions about indigenous histories, and answer your questions about Native people. Spears, Newell, and Mancini teach sections of the Native American Cultures class in our University Interdisciplinary Studies (UIS) program. They also are co-founders of the Akomawt Educational Initiative that is dedicated to effecting a positive and informed change to the narrative of how Native histories and cultures are taught.

In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name have been issued each year since 1994.

At UHart, all students in baccalaureate programs are required to take at least four UIS courses over their four years as part of graduation requirements.
