Psychology major Emily Schwartz ’23 is working as an intern in the UHart Sport Center’s Academic Center where she is learning about the challenges students have when juggling academics and athletics. Emily creates a weekly newsletter for the student athletes that includes reminders and information about mindfulness and motivation. She also posts on the Center’s Instagram account daily and shares wellness information, motivational tips, and time management techniques.
Emily started her academic career in UHart’s Hillyer College and says the experience helped her academically and prepared her to be more confident when she transitioned into the College of Arts and Sciences. She says she also developed strong connections with Hillyer’s Mathematics faculty, as well as Interim Hillyer College Dean Fran Altvater and Associate Professor of Psychology Caryn Christensen in the College of Arts and Sciences. "I chose UHart because of its incredible reputation regarding psychology degrees, as well as the great things I had heard about the professors,” she says.
After graduation, Emily plans to attend graduate school to earn a master's degree in marriage and family counseling. Although she hasn’t made a decision on where she will study, Emily has already been accepted to graduate programs at universities in Connecticut, New York, and Chicago.
Emily advises first-year Hillyer students to reach out to faculty for assistance. “Never be afraid to ask for help or for some clarification. The professors really want to make sure you succeed so they love when you ask questions because it shows initiative and that you care about your education.”
