For as long as she can remember, Roheena Khan has thrived on helping others in need. She will soon take the next step to meeting her goal of working in the health care field when she enters a four-year clinical psychology program (PsyD) at Alliant International University in Los Angeles this fall.

Roheena believes the support she received at UHart gave her a solid foundation for graduate school. She earned a BS in Health Sciences with a minor in psychology, and says the challenging courses prepared her to excel in her clinical psychology program.

“I have had an abundance of support from professors and advisors throughout my college experience,” she said. “UHart prepared me well for graduate school interviews. The communication courses and presentation skills I learned have guided me towards success. The small faculty-to-student ratio made all of this possible. I was able to explore multiple career options before I found something I knew I wanted to do in the future. I created goals, and UHart helped me every step of the way.”

In the Health Sciences program, students gain a strong foundation in the sciences while also taking electives that expose them a variety of health-related topics. For students who are interested in careers in health care but aren’t sure which area to pursue, the program is a great choice.

Like many students, Roheena wasn’t sure exactly what her path through college would be. “I went through a patch where I was unsure about my future endeavors, and every faculty member I reached out to was willing to help and guide me through my confusion. Every professor was so welcoming that I never felt out of place,” she says.

Specifically, Roheena credits Claudia Oakes, associate professor of health sciences, for her ongoing support. “I can’t begin to explain how much Dr. Oakes has taught me, not only about the health care field but also creating a basic framework for me to excel in anything I pursue. She was always willing to help me and discuss career options before I found something I enjoyed. Her encouragement has been greatly and highly appreciated.” She also thanks Associate Professor Dan DeMaio for writing many letters of recommendation and Kristen Lehnhoff in University Interdisciplinary Studies for her support.

Her advice for incoming students is “Take advantage of your professors and advisors! They are there to help, and want nothing more than to push you to reach your full potential and then some.”
