Alissa Hoffman ’22, a marketing major who is also part of the 3+1 accelerated business program at the Barney School of Business, completed an internship with Travelers during the summer of 2021. How did she like her internship experience? “Overall, it was an amazing opportunity and provided me with learning and networking opportunities that I am so thankful for,” Alissa says.
The Barney School of Business gave Alissa the tools to understand the insurance industry and the confidence to navigate the corporate world. “The integration of a broad dynamic of business-oriented courses allowed me to interview well, showcase marketing and technological skills, and also have a knowledge base within Risk Management and Insurance,” Alissa explains. She adds that the opportunities and events shared by clubs and organizations, including Gamma Iota Sigma, helped fuel her interest in Travelers. Alissa believes that UHart faculty also had a tremendous impact on her college successes. “The faculty has been so supportive and helpful along my journey,” she says. “There’s a sense of care when it comes to courses and coursework, and they do strive to make you career-ready!”
Alissa worked with Travelers’ Enterprise Integrated Marketing Team to support web operations and strategy within content marketing that focuses on website publishing and SEO strategy. The internship taught her crucial marketing skills such as how to use a content management system, work with the flow, and collaborate with team members to create a better experience for the agent/customer on the Travelers.com website.
Besides the internship experience, Alissa is prominently involved with activities on the UHart campus. She currently serves as public relations vice president in the Student Government Association, public relations chair in Gamma Iota Sigma, public relations chair in the Asian Student Association, and events chair for the Barney Leadership Council. Alissa’s passion does not stop there, as she is also an active member of the Leadership Education and Development program of The Women’s Advancement Initiative, National Society of Leadership and Success, and American Marketing Association; and serves as a social media ambassador for UHart’s Office of Marketing and Communication. After graduation and leaving her positive impact on the UHart campus, Alissa hopes to return to the insurance industry to work in the marketing field. However, she is always open to new things, explaining that “with another chance for an internship, I would love to experience content marketing and SEO integration with a smaller business.”
What advice does Alissa have for incoming Barney students? She says, “Get involved! Even if it’s not your specific major, it will help you network and work on professional skills. I’ve learned from my time here that all the clubs and organizations I’m involved in are teaching me leadership skills, public speaking skills, and most importantly, time management!”
