Recent UHart graduate Jacob Kalat loves computers, video games, math, and programming. He discovered his personal interests aligned with his academic and professional interest when he decided to study computer engineering at UHart’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. Freedom to explore his area of study and the support from professors allowed Kalat to pursue a career he loves before even graduating from college. He currently holds a full-time position as an information security analyst at MassMutual.  He adds that “over the next few years I’ll be pursuing a master’s degree in cybersecurity and several industry certifications.”

According to Kalat, “UHart fostered my love for information security by allowing me to found the Cybersecurity Club with my peers.” This specialty club hosts presentations, provides resources and current information on the field, facilitates capture the flag and other security skill games, and creates a community where UHart students can explore what the world of cybersecurity has to offer. Kalat was President of the club that now holds over 50 members.

Additionally, Kalat contributed as a teacher’s assistant (TA) for an Introduction to Cybersecurity course offered at the University. In this role, he worked closely with Dr. Alaa Al Ghazo, who was also was the club’s advisor and Kalat’s capstone technical advisor. “He helped me learn about the information security field and was a great mentor during my time at UHart,” says Kalat.

“UHart’s engineering program taught me to use critical thinking skills to find solutions to complex problems,” says Kalat of his undergraduate training. At career fairs on campus, offered through the Office Career and Professional Development, he made connections with information security professionals at local companies. “I was offered an internship for the summer after my graduation. This turned into the full-time job I have today,” says Kalat.

During his undergraduate career, Kalat enjoyed the “small class sizes and cozy campus” at UHart. He goes on to say “some of my favorite memories were from participating in competitive hacking events with the Cybersecurity Club. I also liked spending nights with my friends attending whatever event was happening on campus.”

What advice does he have for new students? Kalat believes students should get involved on campus early. He recommends that students “reach out to professors and clubs because if you have a unique interest on something, pursue it, you never know where it might take you.” He also adds that there is tremendous opportunity for UHart students to start clubs themselves if there is not one that already exists. “The opportunities are endless,” he says.

Over the last four years, UHart’s computer engineering program prepared me to use critical thinking skills to find solutions to complex problems. I also really enjoyed the small class sizes and coziness of campus as it allowed me to really feel part of the UHart community.
