Steven Halsband ’20 likes to solve problems. He does so every day at his job at Chubb, the world’s largest property and casualty insurance company, and he credits the University of Hartford for helping him gain and hone the skills necessary to succeed there.
“UHart taught me to be confident in my abilities and always advocate for myself,” he says.
Halsband studied risk management and insurance at UHart’s Barney School of Business. Lessons were learned both in and out of the classroom.
In addition to a rigorous course load while on campus, Halsband completed two internships: one with a benefit insurance brokerage firm, and the other at a major insurance carrier in Hartford.
Then as a senior, he chose to write a thesis for his independent study course on the complex issue of insuring cannabis companies, given their federal classification. These experiences gave him real-world exposure to the insurance industry before graduation, he says.
Halsband goes on to explain that his love of insurance work developed at UHart, adding, “Without my insurance professors and the program at Barney, I would not have had such a passion for insurance.”
The relationships he cultivated with his professors influenced his success as well. “All of my primary professors had meaningful impact on my career at UHart, and without them I do not believe I would be as driven and eager to learn as I am today,” Halsband says.
The UHart grad continues to learn and enjoy problem solving as he progresses in his career at Chubb. “I am learning the nuances of the industry so I can apply [new skills] down the road in five or 10 years. My experience at UHart was fantastic!”
