Closing Procedures

Below are some reminders on tasks to complete in the move-out process:

  • Return library books to the library front desk or drop box.
  • Return rented textbooks to the Campus Store.
  • Thoroughly clean your room (mop/sweep/vacuum the floor; wipe down University furniture and clean appliances).
  • Take all recycling and trash to dumpsters or recycling receptacles.
  • Take all personal items including your furniture and property out of your room/suite/apartment.
  • Close and lock all windows.
  • Turn off all lights.
  • Lock your room/suite/apartment door(s).
  • Check out with the Office of Residential Life in the Konover Great Room and turn in your key. Though Hawk Hall residents do not have keys, you will still need to come to the Office of Residential Life to check out.
  • Take your University ID home and put it in a safe place until next fall.
  • Ensure all drawers and cabinets are empty.
  • Remove all tape, hooks, nails, etc. from surfaces carefully. Any damage to walls may result in repair charges.
  • Wash ink, marker, and stains off surfaces.  Remove posters, contact paper, stickers, and other decorations from all surfaces in your unit.
  • Make sure screens and windows are in place.
  • Take ALL trash and other belongings out of your housing unit (paper, garbage, personal furniture) and put in dumpsters.
  • Do not leave trash outside your unit, in the quad, in front of your building, or on the sidewalks. Trash bags are available in the Office of Residential Life.
  • Thoroughly clean your bedroom—dust, sweep, vacuum, and mop.
  • Thoroughly clean your living room, kitchen and bathroom(s) including refrigerator, oven, range top, cabinets, countertops, toilets, showers, and sinks—if in a suite or apartment
  • Report potential damage or maintenance concerns to your RA.
  • Please note once you have checked out, you will NOT be able to re-enter your housing unit.

In order to avoid charges after you have left your unit, we encourage you to follow these steps:

  • Thoroughly clean your room as outlined above.
  • Take all recycling and trash to dumpsters or recycling receptacles.
  • Take all personal items including your furniture and property out of your room/suite/apartment.
  • Close and lock all windows.
  • Do an in-person check-out at the Office of Residential Life.
  • Turn in your key to the Office of Residential Life. Please do not leave it in your room as it could get lost and will result in an improper check-out fee.
