Academics at HAS

Our classes are small. That means you can count on lots of personal attention from the professional artists and designers who teach our courses in nine diverse studio areas.

And because we are part of a comprehensive university with a broad range of courses that complement our studio disciplines, you will learn the skills it takes for you to succeed wherever your passion takes you.

Our undergraduate programs in the fine and applied arts leading to the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts. The areas of study that lead to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) are as follows: Animation & Game Art, Illustration, Visual Communication Design and Studio Art concentrations in Ceramics, Painting & Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. We also offer a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art History.

Our graduate programs include two low-residency Master of Fine Art programs.

Your Foundation Year

Your foundation year introduces you to the fundamental processes and principles of art-making and design, and will help you determine your major. You will explore specific areas of interest and develop at a professional level from your very first day.

Low Residency Graduate Programs

Our two low-residency Master of Fine Art programs are designed specifically to meet the needs of practicing artists seeking the terminal degree in their discipline while maintaining active, full-time professional careers. Each program requires approximately 27 months to complete.

Students come to the Hartford Art School during a two-to-four week summer intensive residency, and travel to selected cities in locations around the world during intensive 1-2 week sessions throughout the rest of the year. Off-campus locations are chosen carefully for their proximity to major art markets, site-specific learning opportunities, and practicing professionals.

All our programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
