Rashmi Viswanathan, Jacqueline Lubin, and Stephanie Tavarez were among 33 faculty members honored from 20 member institutions.

A fellowship brings opportunities for professional development and mentorship, as well as writing retreats and writing groups which allow fellows to focus on their scholarship.

Viswanathan, assistant professor of art history at the Hartford Art School, is using her fellowship to complete a chapter of her book on cultural diplomacy and art. “I am part of a terrific department here at UHart, from the students to the faculty, all of whom make art history on our campus a truly motivating force.”

“I had a mixture of emotions—joy, gratitude, and humility—when I learned of my being named an NSC fellow,” says Lubin, an assistant professor in special education at the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. “Being a fellow will be instrumental in strengthening my research and academic writing skills, and I look forward to establishing a scholarly network that I can rely on for advice.” Lubin’s academic specialties center on improving the lives of students with disabilities, including those with autism.

Tavarez, an assistant professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, focuses on training and development and organizational effectiveness. She expects to use her fellowship to complete the manuscripts she’s been working on and build meaningful connections with other NSC fellows. “I was so excited when I learned of my selection,” she says. “I’m eager to contribute to the program.”

NSC is now in its fourth year and continues to grow in popularity. This semester’s applicant pool was the largest to date, which NSC says is reflective of the need for academic spaces that nourish and uplift BIPOC faculty.
