Korean American pianist Soohyung Susan Yoo has performed for audiences throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe, at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, Academy of Music in Philadelphia, and Salle Cortot in Paris. She has garnered prizes in several international competitions, such as the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, International Young Artists Piano Competition, Pinault International Competition, semi-finalist at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and prizewinner of the Artist International Presentations, resulting in a solo debut recital at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2009.
Soohyung obtained her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland with her thesis “Uses of Variations and Fugues in Piano Music since the Classical Period.” She also trained in Europe through the International Certificate for Piano Artists program held by the École Normal de Musique de Alfred Cortot in Paris and Fondation Bell’Arte de Braine-l'Alleud in Belgium. Her principal teachers include Thomas Schumacher, Eleanor Sokoloff, Larissa Dedova, Nelson Delle-Vigne Fabri and Hugh Sung. In addition, she has performed in masterclasses for renown pianists such as Alicia DeLarrocha, Lazar Berman, Gary Graffman, Phillipe Entremont, Jerome Lowenthal, and Francois Duchable.
Soohyung performs regularly, both as a soloist and collaborative artist, and her repertoire ranges from standard piano repertoire to premiering new works. She is also an experienced and dedicated educator and has worked with piano students across the United States. Her students continuously receive high marks in exams and several have won prizes in competitions. Soohyung has held faculty positions at Frederick College, and the Los Angeles High School for the Arts. She is currently on the piano faculty at the Hartt School, and Miss Porter’s School where she is a Pianist, Piano Instructor, and coordinator of the music lessons program. Soohyung resides in Farmington, CT with her husband, two musical young children, and Tonkinese cat.
