Hannah Moore believes in empowering lives through music. Combining the unique experiences of the individual with diverse resources available in music creates an outcome that not only benefits the individual but also furthers the field of music. This belief transcends through her work as an educator, performer, and composer.

Hannah has experience teaching individuals and groups across three states with her students ranging from seven to sixty-five years old. She has taught private lessons at Ohio State University, Pickerington North High School, Jenks High School, as well as independently. In a group context, she designed and led the first academic music course at the Tulsa Boys Home, an institution for at-risk youth ages eleven to nineteen, which lead to the creation of a full-time music program. Hannah also worked with the Delaware Hayes Marching Band as the head percussion instructor. As an educator and pursuer of knowledge, Hannah is also one of the founders of Mallets and Manuscripts, a monthly online discussion group, open to all, that focuses on percussion repertoire, method books, and works by up-and-coming composers.

As a performer, Hannah’s passion is collaborating with other artists. Her previous solo recitals have been accompanied by film maker Sicily Seitz, animators Gracie Denbow and Jamie Bridle, modern dancer Emmie Hess, and the Ohio State Swing Dance Club. She has also commissioned works by living composers Joseph Spearman, Grace Coberly, Joshua Muetzel, and Ethan Isaac. Hannah has performed with a variety of ensembles including the Ohio Wesleyan Symphonic Band, Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus, Zuva Zimbabwean marimba ensemble, Westerville Symphony, and the Heisey Wind Ensemble. She has also performed at the VIVO Music Festival and Bang on a Can Loud Weekend.

As a composer Hannah is concerned with the intersection between the composition and performer. Her compositional style focuses on combining standard and extended techniques in unique configurations to create new soundscapes. Taking these unique soundscapes and tailoring them to the unique skill sets of performers creates a distinct musical experience for the performers and audience. Hannah has been commissioned by the Pickerington North High School Percussion ensemble, Summit Ridge Duo, and various Columbus-based musicians. Her works are available on Wildlight Publications.

Hannah Moore received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Ohio State University. She is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but currently resides in Hartford, Connecticut where she is working towards her doctorate at the Hartt School of Music.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that music instruction should mold individuals into thoughtful and intentional creatives. Through focus on proper technique, quality musicianship, intentional sound choice, developing a personal artistic voice, and unhindered creative exploration, students will expand their critical thinking, creativity, decision making, and innovation. These skills will not only further individuals wishing to pursue music in a professional or amateur setting, but also empower individuals wishing to pursue other paths.

Every student has unique experiences and passions they bring to their lessons. Starting with a solid foundation in technical facility and musical literacy empowers students to express themselves without hindrance. Once a foundation is created, I focus on the individual experiences and passions of each student to create a tailored instructional path that cultivates their unique voice. I want my students to not only understand music, but understand how to express themselves.
