HAS Staff Exhibition: Where to Begin?

Silpe Gallery

September 1 – October 15, 2022

It should come as no surprise that most of the Hartford Art School Staff are also practicing artists. From printmaking to digital illustration to textiles, this exhibition celebrates the diverse creative talents of the Hartford Art School Staff, many of whom are alumni of the University of Hartford.

In Where to Begin? the Staff weigh in on how they translate a new idea into a work of art. The results reveal how individual memories, rigorous experimentation, and unexpected encounters can spark creativity. Seemingly mundane materials essential to daily labor at an art school—computer packaging or discarded bits of vinyl—are transformed into visually and conceptually captivating compositions. Others find the genesis for new ideas outside of the workplace—in thrift stores, magazines, a deck of cards, or among family heirlooms.

Taken together, the works on display in Where to Begin? are a reminder that acts of creation yield opportunities for critical introspection—proof that every artist, no matter their day job, should never stop making.

This exhibition is supported by the Joseloff Gallery Programs Fund held by HAS Endowment, Inc.
