2023 Alexander A. Goldfarb Juried Student Exhibition
Joseloff Gallery
January 26 – February 11, 2023
A longstanding tradition at the University of Hartford, this exhibition honors the late Alexander Goldfarb and his dedication to the arts by featuring artwork from some of the University’s most talented students. Of the 159 artworks submitted, fifty-one were chosen for exhibition by this year’s juror Sam Adams, Ph.D., and the Ellen Johnson ’33 Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College. A feminist art historian who is particularly concerned with identity-based issues in recent art, Dr. Adams’ brought a noteworthy level of care to this year’s jury process, making note of common themes —and surprises—that run through the students’ artwork.
Pristine, altered, or toxic landscapes; illusion and mysticism; vulnerable bodies; portraits of the artist; the subversion of political systems; and escapes into spaces of precarity—these are but a few of the sub-themes that organize this year’s installation, a testament to the conceptual breadth and depth of artwork produced by students today. From trompe-l'œil painting to mixed-media collage to nineteenth-century photographic processes, the level of technical skill on display likewise is sure to impress.
Of the works chosen for exhibition, two receive Purchase Prizes and enter the Goldfarb Memorial Collection, owned by the Hartford Art School and proudly displayed in public spaces throughout the campus. This year’s winners are Drew Greene for their painting, Guardian Angel, and Devon Edwards for his charcoal drawing, The Circus.
The exhibition and associated programming are made possible by the Alexander A. Goldfarb Endowment fund held by the Hartford Art School Endowment, Inc.
