Karan Prajapati ’23 is an international student who traveled all the way from India to study at the University of Hartford. Presently, Prajapati is working on the CVS Healthcare learning project including a case competition, where competitors must develop innovative alternatives specific to the LGBTQ+ community in order to provide them with better access to health care.

Yuriy Mishtal ’23, a finance major and actuarial science minor, has spent his time at the University of Hartford becoming nothing short of ambitious. Mishtal has involved himself as an active member of the Actuarial Club, Gamma Iota Sigma, and the Barney Leadership Council, and has successfully completed several internships since his start at the University. However, it doesn’t stop here. Mishtal is currently making the most of his time by studying abroad in Amsterdam.

Melissa Pereira ’19 doesn’t hesitate when she tells you what she liked best about her time at UHart: Barney faculty and staff, being a member of the D1 softball team, and experiencing a closely-knit student body. Grateful for all that UHart has offered her on and off the field, and in and out of the classroom, Melissa is inspired to stay connected to the community and faculty that made her UHart experience so enriching and successful. Even before graduation from UHart, Jessica de Atienza, who is part of Barney’s 3+1 accelerate business program, has been hired by Travelers to participate in their Finance Leadership Development Program, beginning June 2021. She made the connection to Travelers through an internship she did over the summer. De Atienza is well-suited for her new position at Travelers because of her experiences at UHart with excellent professors and the receipt of a well-rounded education.

Jade Soto ’20 is an entrepreneur, so an internship with The Entrepreneurial Center and Women’s Business Center in East Hartford, Conn was a perfect match for her. Soto, who will graduated in December 2020 with a degree in communications with an emphasis in digital media & journalism, was an intern without course credit at the Entrepreneurial Center (EC) in fall, 2019.

Graduating senior, Sara Aguilar, studied Marketing and Management at the Barney School of Business. As a part of the stringent Barney curriculum, Aguilar participated in an internship, which lead to a permanent full-time position in her senior year. Upon graduation from the Barney School of Business, Hayley Nolan will have earned her MBA, but plans to take a non-traditional approach to starting a new career. For the past five years, she has been working towards academic success, and rather than landing an office job, she will be playing professional soccer at a club and International level with Republic of Ireland Women's Soccer team.

Teaming Up: UHart students from different disciplines work with manufacturing giant
At the University of Hartford, hands–on learning to prepare students for the future takes place in class and through job shadowing, internships, and independent study. Last spring, Chelsea Chaves ’20 was one of four students in an interdisciplinary independent study working with Hubbell Incorporated conducting market research on Arc Fault Current Interrupters (AFCI), a circuit breaker that breaks the circuit when it detects an electric arc in an effort to prevent electrical fires.
