Dance auditions are held on campus as well in select cities around the United States. Hartt Dance will also accept recorded auditions.
The Hartt Dance Division is looking for dancers with evidence of strong technical training, artistry, and facility in the following areas: physical awareness, expressiveness, coordination, articulation, suppleness, stamina, musicality, presence, and an eagerness to learn, move, and perform in both balletic and non-balletic styles.
The live audition will consist of a 2-hour class incorporating classical ballet, pointe work (for women if applicable), plus a 1-hour class in modern and improvisational work.
Dancers should also come prepared to perform a short solo, 1-3 minutes in length, in the event that the panel requests additional work.
Assessment is based on technical proficiency, physicality, creativity, and authenticity of movement expression. Each dance applicant will also interview with a dance division faculty member.

Audition videos should be uploaded to your UHart applicant portal or through Acceptd. All video auditions must demonstrate the following:
Ballet
Barre
- pliés
- battement tendu/dégagé
- rond de jambe à terre and en l'air
- adagio
- frappé
- grand battement
Center
- tendu en croix with port de bras
- adagio
- waltz combination with pirouettes
- petit and grand allegro
- pointe work (if applicable)
Modern
- Modern phrases emphasizing torso movement and articulation, falling into floor, rising out of floor.
Solo
- Solo of choice, preferably Ballet, Modern, or Contemporary dance. No longer than 3 minutes. An improvisation (maximum 3 minutes in length) can be presented in lieu of a solo.
NO STAGE PERFORMANCE VIDEOS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Solid light colored tights, solid colored leotard, ballet and pointe shoes (if applicable). Bare feet for modern.
All dance attire must be close fitting. Hair must be secured away from face and neck.
