1. I didn’t do anything! Why am I being told I have to have a student conduct meeting?
You are being requested to meet due to a misconduct violation that you are presumed to be involved in. This may be due to several different reasons (health & safety, fire drills, closing, and documentations by a Res. Life official, facilities, Public Safety, etc.). However, the purpose of the meeting is to allow you the opportunity to advocate for yourself and speak to your conduct hearing officer about your role in the misconduct violation or lack thereof. Failure to attend your meeting means that you forfeit your right to appeal.
2. Can I see my file before the meeting?
You are able to view your case report before your meeting, but you will need to visit the Office of Student Conduct located in GSU 307.
3. What’s going to happen at my meeting?
During your meeting, you will meet one-on-one with a trained student conduct officer to go over the details of incident. You will have an opportunity to read your case report(s) and have your rights (including the purpose of the meeting, misconduct disputes, timelines, FERPA, sanctions and consequences of noncompliance) explained to you. During the meeting you will have an opportunity to tell your side of the incident in your own words. The outcome of the meeting will depend on the details of your misconduct and your cooperation.
4. How are student conduct decisions made?
The decisions are typically made based on your student conduct history, the extent of the incident and your cooperation or lack thereof.
5. Can I reschedule?
The meetings are scheduled around your class schedule. Therefore rescheduling is typically not permitted. Work is not a valid reason to reschedule. If you have any questions about rescheduling, please call 860.768.5402.
6. What happens if I miss my meeting?
If you miss your meeting, the case will then be heard in your absence and an administrative decision will be made by the student conduct officer. You will receive the outcome via your Hartford email. The decision will be made based on the information available to the conduct officer.
7. Are you going to tell my parents about this?
Your student conduct record is confidential. It will not be discussed with your parents unless you authorize us to do so via FERPA release form. However, the University reserves the right and therefore we may notify parents/guardians of incidents involving drug, health and safety, the student’s well-being or alcohol usage.
8. Am I going to lose my housing?
Loss of housing may be a possibility depending on the severity and the outcome of your case. It will be a combination of your case history, the conditions of your probation and other factors that will be taken into consideration. This will be a case by case decision since no one case is ever the same.
9. I’m not responsible and I can prove it!
Everything starts with the student conduct meeting. You are welcome to bring any documentation to your meeting. During your meeting, you can opt to pursue a misconduct dispute. The misconduct dispute allows you to keep your case open for an additional seven (7) academic days. This gives you an opportunity to prove that you are not responsible for the violation(s) you are charged with. The misconduct dispute is not available to students who do not come to their conduct meeting.
10. I don’t think my meeting was fair and I want to appeal. What do I do?
There is a review process for students who disagree with the outcome of their conduct meeting. To appeal, you will need to visit the Student Conduct office located in GSU 307. Your request must be filed within five (5) academic days of your conduct meeting. If you fail to attend your meeting, you forfeit your right to appeal.
11. What do I do if I need an extension on a sanction deadline?
You will need to speak with the conduct officer who assigned the sanction to you. A best practice it to wait to contact them at least one week in advance and ask them about your options. Extensions are not guaranteed. Therefore it is in your best interest to request an extension in advance not the day of.
12. What if I don’t do my sanctions?
Failure to complete your sanction within the allocated time frame is considered noncompliance. Noncompliance is an offense that may jeopardize your ability to live in campus housing. You will be contacted via email if you are found in noncompliance.
