This is my story

A Class of Her Own

I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. I chose the University of Hartford to get my teacher training because the Education faculty places you in an urban school setting to gain experience right from the start in freshman year.

As a student teacher, I have done one-on-one, small group, and whole class instruction in writing, math, and reading. So in my particular placement, I’ve had been given the opportunity to try out all three and see what strategies work and what don’t work and adjust accordingly.

The most rewarding part of being a student teacher is having my students gain an understanding of what I taught them. I spend so much time planning my lessons and thinking about how I’m going to deliver them. I really focus on how to make it engaging for them. When they are engaged and they are excited about what I’m teaching them, that’s the most rewarding thing. I’ve definitely had those moments, particularly in reading, when I’ve been working on a lesson for some time, then I’ve seen the light bulb go off and the student says, “I understand it. I got it.” It’s great when they can then do it on their own.

I can’t wait to get my own class so I can work with a whole new set of kids and really see the progress that my kids will make from September to June and know that it’s because of what I taught them.
