About Special Interest Housing

Special Interest Housing (SIH) offers students who are going to be sophomores, juniors, or seniors the opportunity to create unique and exciting living experience. This program allows students to live together as a group around a common personal or academic theme. Participants in this program form theme-based groups that are interested in a common goal, follow a set of beliefs, or have a specific passion.

To be eligible to participate in this program, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Pay your room reservation deposit by April 8, 2014

  2. Submit an online housing application for the 2014–2015 academic year through the Self-Service Center by 3 p.m. on April 9, 2014

  3. Be in good standing with the Office of Residential Life and Office of Student Conduct Administration

  4. Be registered as a full-time student

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about our Special Interest Housing program:

What's so SPECIAL about Special Interest Housing? Students get to live within a group of students they know and with whom they have a shared interest or goal. You will also get to plan and participate in a variety of meetings, programs, and other initiatives that are focused on your group's specific theme. If accepted into SIH, you and your friends will be placed in a suite together in Regents Park, avoiding room selection.

What are some themes that have been used in the past?  We encourage students to be creative with their SIH themes. Some past SIH themes include:

  • Wellness
  • Substance Free
  • Hawk Spirit
  • Gaming
  • Leadership
  • Science

Where is Special Interest Housing located? SIH groups will be housed in one wing of Regents Park. Regents Park consists of four-person suites. Your group must fill a suite completely. If there are eight people in your group, Residential Life will attempt to find suites that are next to or across from each other so that you can be as close as possible.

At the end of the year, the Office of Residential Life will assess each SIH theme to determine if specific themes were successful. Groups that are considered successful  and are interested in continuing with their SIH theme may be offered the option of relocating as a group to the Village for the 2015-2016 academic year.

What is required of SIH participants? SIH participants will be highly involved in developing their own structure and action plan for their specific group. However, each group will be expected to:

  • Schedule and attend SIH group meetings
  • Develop a minimum of one to two programs a semester based on your theme
  • Develop a mission, specific goals, and learning outcomes for your SIH group
  • Participate and utilize the SIH Blackboard group
  • Meet with SIH program coordinators as needed

Are there any additional costs associated with participating in the SIH program? No. You will be charged the regular cost of a Regents Park single or double, depending on the setup of the suite to which you are assigned.
