A group of University students will spend spring break helping the people of Tuscaloosa, Ala. rebuild their community after a tornado killed dozens of people and caused wide spread damage in April 2011. The 34 students and their three advisors will leave for Alabama from the Konover Campus Center at the University of Hartford on Friday, March 16 at 8 p.m. They will return to campus on Saturday, March 25, at approximately 9 p.m.

During their six days in Alabama, referred to as alternative spring break because they chose to do community service rather than take a vacation, the group will receive Red Cross disaster training and work on reconstruction, home improvement, debris removal and tree planting projects. They will also volunteer at food banks, free clothing outlets, Head Start programs, Boys and Girls Clubs and soup kitchens.

In addition to helping others, the students will have an opportunity to learn about the nation’s civil rights era when they visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and take the Civil Rights Walking Tour in that city.
