Donn Weinholtz of Windsor Honored at University of Hartford Commencement
Donn Weinholtz of Windsor was honored at the University of Hartford's 53rd annual Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 16, with the Donald W. Davis All-University Curriculum Award. The All-University Curriculum (AUC) is an innovative program that allows students to explore the depth and breadth of a liberal arts education, including heritage, culture, the arts, social context, science, and technology.
Weinholtz is a professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership in the University's College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions. He has taught four courses in the AUC program for 18 years, and helped to develop two courses, including the long-running, "Gender, Identity, and Society." Most recently, he collaborated with an interdisciplinary team of colleagues to create the new course, "Leadership: Challenges and Opportunities," which launched in the fall of 2009 to very favorable student reviews.
For the past 12 years, Weinholtz has joined with University President Walter Harrison to team-teach the course "Discovering America 1945-Present." They developed the course using the culture and history of Hartford to explain the culture and history of America. As part of the coursework, students take tours of Hartford and its suburbs. Guest speakers in the course have included Hartford mayors, U.S. congressmen, and community activists.
Weinholtz was dean of the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions from 1991 to 1998. From 1992 to 1996, he was co-chair of the planning and policy committee of the University of Hartford Magnet School, a magnet pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school located on the University campus. Weinholtz has also served as a University regent and chair of the Faculty Senate.
