Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The University of Hartford observes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day each year with an event in Lincoln Theater. The annual program is filled with music, poetry, and reflections on the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. 


The Right to Dream 2013

Lest We Forget-2012


Students from the University of Hartford Magnet School prepared for their performance.Aja Wilson '10 performed "Study War No More."Students from the University of Hartford High School of Science and Engineering recited their original poetry.(l-r) Bo-Edward Lawrence, a 12th grader, J'Vaughn Joseph, an 11th grader, and Ashley Richards, a 12th grader, received a standing ovation after their performance.Fifth graders from the University of Hartford Magnet School sang in the MLK Speakchorus.Laura Deutsch, a teacher at the magnet school, led the MLK Speakchorus.Maestro Willie Anthony Waters, former general and artistic director of the Connecticut Opera, was the featured speaker.Shawnn Monteirro sang "Left Alone" by Mal Waldron.Monteirro was accompanied by Mark Templeton, Nat Reeves, Adam Grover '12, Liam Hannah '14, Cathryn Cummings M'13 and Joshua Thompson, all of The Hartt School.Essay winners Karina Ma '11, Bo-Edward Lawrence, a 12th grader at the University High School of Science and Engineering, and Melonie Jackson, a fifth grader at the University of Hartford Magnet School, were recognized.Erica Bryan '15 sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson.University of Hartford President congratulated (l-r) J'Vaughn Joseph, Ashley Richards and Bo-Edward Lawrence on their poetry performance.


Keeping the Dream Alive-2011


Students from the Charter Oak International Academy waited to perform during the Martin Luther King Day observance.Josh Bruneau '10 played "Peace" by Horace Silver.University of Hartford President Walter Harrison welcomed visitors.Students from the University of Hartford Magnet School sang "Let There Be Peace on Earth" by Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller.The students were led by teacher Laura Deutsch.Many families attended the observance.Jennifer Smith Turner, CEO of Girl Scouts of Connecticut, delivered remarks.Students from Charter Oak International Academy performed "Shalom" by Teresa Jennings.The students were led by teachers Melissa Zych and Cheryl Tierney.Shenel Johns '12 sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by James Weldon Johnson.Jilda Aliotta associate professor of Politics & Government, President Walter Harrison and Jennifer Smith Turner congratulated essay contest winners Cassidy Glaner '14, Vince Jerome Mack and Milkayla Holness.Mikayla Jolness, a 5th grader at the University of Hartford Magnet School celebrates winning the essay contest.
