This is my story
My name is Keyokah Fawn Mars-Garrick. Preserving Narragansett traditions is very important to me. That’s one reason I started dancing—the other is because I love it. I first danced on my mom’s hip as a baby. Later my cousin taught me the dance I do, the Eastern blanket dance, which is a courting dance.
I visit schools as often as I can to talk to third- and fourth-graders about my heritage. I teach them about our lives today as well as our history. It’s important to me that they know Native Americans are still here and that they can learn about our traditions.
We are a tall family. My three older brothers played basketball, and my uncle played in the NBA. When it came to me, I told my dad I hated basketball and wanted to play soccer. He asked me to give it a year and that was all it took. University of Hartford was the perfect fit for me. I wanted to play Division I basketball, and my teammates were very welcoming. That and the size of the school made me feel very comfortable when I came here to visit.
I aspired my whole life to attend college, and now that I’m here, I’ve met people I will never forget. I think I actually chose the business management major a long time ago because my mom works in business. I’ve learned a lot about the corporate world through the internship I had and the courses I’ve taken. I feel very well prepared to be successful in business. I’ve had individual help from faculty members, too, like Assistant Professor Lillian Kamal. I’m not that great in math, but she made me feel like a genius. I got an A in her macroeconomics class.
