This is my story

Joy Dagher ’12

From Lebanon With Love

I have always wanted to pursue my college degree outside my country, Lebanon. The climate is beautiful there, it has many historic landmarks, and one of my favorite places is a wonderful beach located right next to downtown Beirut looking out over the beautiful Mediterranean. But because I like to learn about different cultures and be part of them, too, I wanted an international experience. The idea of studying in the United States was one of my interests because of the numerous opportunities this country offers.

One of the main reasons I was attracted to the University of Hartford was my aunt, Ingrid Russell, who is a computer science professor here. I was looking for a degree in business so I checked out the Barney School of Business website. The fact that the Barney School is accredited by AACSB-International, which places it among the top 5 percent of the world’s business schools, appealed to me a lot because I was not only looking for the international experience, but also an excellent college degree.

The leadership programs the school offers also intrigued me. The Barney Leadership Council was one of the first organizations that caught my attention. I remember how members of the council came to my BAR 110 [World of Business] class to speak to us. That encouraged me to be a part of it.

One more thing that attracted me was the fact that there are a lot of international students, like me, who chose to pursue their degree here. It gives me a feeling similar to when I’m at my favorite beach in Lebanon. What is especially wonderful about that beach is how, even among all of Lebanon’s internal and religious difficulties, people of all faiths and all backgrounds come together and share the area in a friendly, cooperative manner. Seeing this always gives me faith in the ability of people to overcome their differences and coexist in peace.
