Laura Pence, a professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hartford, recently spent a sabbatical year as a Congressional Science Policy Fellow in the Washington, D.C;, office of U.S. Sen. Michael Bennett of Colorado. In the second part of this two-part interview, she talks about forest fires in the West and problems with prescribed burns; the tension between residential development and forest preservation, and differing perceptions of climate change in the East and West;

Pence also discusses the threat of water scarcity worldwide; the many players involved in working out water-use strategies; the "show-horses" and "work-horses" in the U.S. Senate; and the middle way as an alternative to partisan stalemate.
