This is my story

Hayden Harrower '14

Finding His Passion

When I arrived on campus as a freshman, I did not even know that improv comedy even existed, let alone in the form of a troupe like Stop Laughing Mom (SLM). Invited to attend a show early in my freshman year, I was hooked. I have been a member of SLM for all four years I have been a student here. It has been a great experience performing live shows every month; the first art form that I felt like I could really get into and have fun with. Being the middle child of four sisters and a brother, to be heard, you have to be loud and witty. So, perhaps, I had a head start coming from a large family.

At our SLM performances, we develop comedic scenes and situations in different styles and structures off the top of our head—mostly based on suggestions from the audience. Every show is different. We get to find out what the show is about with the audience.

Improv comedy is something that has changed the way I look at life. It has been a key catalyst in my college career. To pursue further training, and even comedic writing, I will be heading to Chicago to take classes with the teachers in the improv epicenter of the United States, while also pursuing a graduate study in communications and behavioral sciences.

The opportunity to get involved with a student group like Stop Laughing Mom, combined with the knowledge I have gained and the mentoring I have received as a communication major studying human communication, journalism, and media, has made my University of Hartford experience invaluable. I really feel as though it was tailored exactly to what I wanted out of an education.
