This is my story

Luciana Arraes ’13

Violinist for Social Change

My home, Belém in northern Brazil, is the gateway to the Amazon River. It is a warm, friendly, magical place.

I came to the United States in 2008. I chose to get an advanced degree from the University of Hartford because its Hartt School is one of the most respected music schools in the country.

In addition to studying at Hartt, I am member of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas (YOA). We perform throughout North, Central, and South America. As a member of YOA’s Global Leaders Program, I am learning what it takes to lead social initiatives through music, a mission in which I deeply believe.

Music can change a person’s life. To be a student of any instrument you have to be disciplined and focused. If you reach children when they are very young, you can instill these values in their lives.

After I receive my degree, I plan to return home to teach. I want to make a difference. The University of Hartford is giving me the tools to make a difference in Brazil.
