Parent Orientation

Parent Orientation takes place during each of our orientation sessions and runs alongside the student program. It is planned so that while your student is meet with faculty and becoming familiar with university life, you may attend discussion sessions with faculty and staff designed to acquaint you further with our mission, programs, and procedures. 


During Parent Orientation you will:

  • Arrive and check in with your student between 9 and 10:15 a.m. at the University Commons.
  • Attend a Welcome Program with your student designed to get everyone excited for the days and years ahead.
  • Eat lunch, dinner, and breakfast in our dining facilities.
  • Be introduced to the Dean of your student's college and learn about your student's academic program and expectations.
  • Hear from representatives from student support offices such as: Career Services, Residential Life, the Dean of Students, Access-Ability Services, Student Activities and Greek Life, Study Abroad, Center for Student Success and First-Year Advising, Health Services, and Counseling and Psychological Services.
  • Attend a presentation about financial aid and meeting college costs.
  • Have an opportunity to learn more about our division 1 athletics program, resources for first-generation students, and/or services for students with disabilities if any of these apply to your student.

Sessions 1-4 Schedule


Arrival and Registration

Time: 9:00 a.m.–10:15 a.m.

Location: Gengras Student Union

Check in for Orientation, pick up the student's dorm key and help them move in for the weekend. (Parents will not stay on campus)

Welcome Program

Time: 10:45 a.m.—11:45 a.m.


Time: 12 p.m.–1 p.m.

Introduction to your student's college

Time: 1–2:15 p.m.

Parent Afternoon Program

Time: 2:45–4:00 p.m.

Presentation by the student services staff and campus life administrators, followed by Q&A.

Relax and Mingle

Time: 4–5 p.m.


Time: 4:30—6:30 p.m.

Location: Univeristy Commons

Parent's College

Time: 6:30–7:45 p.m.

Come smile, laugh, and share in the excitement and joy of learning with an introduction to the UIS - All University Curriculum and a presentation by one of our students’ favorite professors



Time: 8–9 a.m.

Dollars and Sense

Time: 9–10:15 a.m.

Location: Lincoln Theater

Presentations by the Director of Financial Aid and the Director of the Bursar's Office.

Resource Fair

Time: 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.

E-Billing and FERPA

Time: 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.

Learn how to sign up authorized bill payers and complete the FERPA requirements for release of information.

Informational Meeting for Recruited or Walk-on Athletes

Time: 10:45–11:15 a.m.

Location: Dana Hall, Mali 2 (First Floor)

I'm First! First Generation Students

Time: 10:45–11:15 a.m.

Location: Dana Hall, Mali 1 (First Floor)

Access-Ability Services Meeting for Parents of Students with Disabilities

Time: 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.

To sign up for Parent Orientation see the complimentary and additional guest payment information. *Please note for Transfer Orientation there is no Parent Orientation program. 

While students attending Orientation will stay on campus, there are no on campus accomations for parents. Please plan accordingly. Check out lodging in the area.
